Laparotomy
Lap assisted spays, gastropexy, lap assisted cystotomy for bladder stone removal.
Laparoscopic Assisted procedures (spays, gastropexy and cystotomy) for dogs is a minimally invasive surgical procedure.
Here's how it is performed:
Preparation: The dog is placed under general anesthesia, and the abdominal area is shaved and surgical scrub is performed to prepare the skin for surgery.
Incisions: Small incisions are made in the dog's abdomen, typically around the navel. These incisions are used to insert a laparoscope (a small camera) and other surgical instruments.
Laparoscope Insertion: The laparoscope is inserted through one of the incisions, providing a magnified view of the abdominal cavity on a monitor. This allows the surgeon to see the appropriate structures (uterus, bladder) and surrounding structures clearly.
Organ Exposure: Using the laparoscopic instruments, the surgeon carefully manipulates the appropriate organ into a position where it can be accessed through a slightly larger incision. Once the procedure is completed the incisions are closed.
Cystotomy: A small incision is made in the bladder to remove stones, tumours, or other obstructions. This part of the procedure is performed under direct vision to ensure precision and safety.
Closure: The laparoscopic instruments and the laparoscope are removed, and the small abdominal incisions are closed with sutures or staples.
Recovery: The dog is closely monitored as it wakes up from anesthesia. The minimally invasive nature of the procedure typically results in less post-operative pain, quicker recovery times, and smaller scars compared to traditional open surgery.
Post-Operative Care: The dog will need to wear an Elizabethan collar to prevent licking or biting at the incision sites. Follow-up visits are necessary to monitor healing and ensure there are no complications.
Laparoscopic assisted procedures offer the benefits of a less invasive approach, reducing recovery time and discomfort for the dog while providing the surgeon with a clear view and precise control during the procedure.
